The ECO Guide to Frugal Green Living

In the Spring 2009 edition of the ECO newsletter "Clearing The Air", we published an article entitled Going Green Makes Cents. The ideas and resources listed on this web page are intended to supplement both that article and the follow-up piece, Be a Frugalista. We hope this information will prove helpful to anyone trying to live frugal and green.

Some Of Our Favorite Ways To Save Money And Help The Environment (in no particular order)

Remember to be a conscious consumer. Think twice before making ANY purchase, large or small. Shop second hand stores as much as possible. Our new online map of area thrift shops is now available. Click here or on the map above. Determine whether an item can be repaired before just tossing it out. When it's time to buy items like cars, electronics and appliances, do your research and choose the most efficient, highest quality items you can afford.

Utilize your local library! Every book, CD, DVD, magazine etc. that you borrow is one less item purchased, one less item eventually discarded. Why buy "Going Green for Dummies" or "Go Green, Live Rich" when you can check it out for free? And the best part is, anyone can get a library card free of charge here:

The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County

Join a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and/or visit a nearby farmers market. Some may argue that this suggestion doesn't meet the criteria of green AND frugal because of the cost, but we disagree. While a CSA does require an up front investment (prices vary), the amount of produce you receive is usually far more than what you would get from your grocery store for the same price. Also, often there are bargains to be found at farmers markets if you look, and the value, quality and freshness cannot be beat. Learn more about CSA's and find a conveniently located farmers market here:

Consider making your own cleaning supplies. Homemade formulas are cheap, effective and eco-friendly. Several of the sites listed below have recipes that you can try, or start here:
