A "Gutter Cleanup Day" was held on Saturday, May 4th in the Middletown Oneida neighborhood. The event was sponsored by UNADA (United Neighbors For Dirty Air), the Sierra Club, ECO: Environmental Community Organization, and Ohio Citizen Action.
Over 80 volunteers participated in the event, helping Middletown residents deal with the particulate matter from AK Steel that collects in the gutters of their homes. This particulate matter rains down on Oneida neighborhoods on a daily basis, making it necessary to clean out gutters frequently.
Volunteers came from local schools, universities and areas throughout the state of Ohio, including Toledo, Cleveland, and Akron.
A portion of the particulate matter collected from the homes will be sent to independent labs for testing of heavy metals and chemicals.
