It is estimated by scientists that, worldwide, more than two million plastic bags are consumed and discarded per minute. That is approximately 1.3 trillion plastic bags annually. Both the creation and disposal of single use plastic bags is taking a heavy toll on freshwater and marine environments. Many communities have reduced the consumption of single-use, disposable plastic bags, and the pollution that they create, by banning their distribution or placing a small fee on them. The City of Cincinnati should attach a small fee to single-use carryout bags, thereby tracking, reducing, and mitigating their use and attendant costs such as plastic pollution. The fee will benefit retailers, the environment, and the City of Cincinnati.
